Fast-tracked energy modeling for building code compliance in a commercial warehouse expansion

Summary

  • The project involved rapid energy modeling for a warehouse and office addition in St. Marys, Ontario, with a two-week deadline.

  • Adaptis evaluated the design, provided energy efficiency recommendations, and ensured compliance with the Ontario Building Code (SB-10).

  • The project achieved 30% EUI savings, 35% GHGI savings, and 44% peak demand savings, meeting regulatory requirements and supporting the customer’s sustainability objectives.

Building Information

Location: St Mary's, Ontario

Building Use: Commercial Warehouse

Number of Buildings: 1

This project involved the energy modeling of an 86,500 ft² warehouse and office addition in St. Marys, Ontario. The customer needed to assess the building design for energy efficiency and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions while ensuring compliance with the Ontario Building Code (OBC) SB-10. With a tight two-week deadline, Adaptis was engaged to provide a comprehensive energy model and submit the necessary documentation to meet regulatory requirements.

Challenge

The primary driver was the need to demonstrate compliance with Ontario’s SB-10 energy code, essential for obtaining building permits and meeting sustainability goals. The challenge laid in quickly and accurately assessing the building design for energy and GHG savings, within the two-week timeframe, while ensuring all recommendations were feasible and met OBC standards. Traditional energy modeling processes often take several months, potentially delaying the project and increasing costs due to prolonged timelines.

Summary of Targets

The scope included evaluating the initial building design, identifying opportunities for energy efficiency improvements, and ensuring compliance with SB-10. Customer was motivated by the need for rapid regulatory approval and achieving significant energy and GHG savings.

Results

The project achieved compliance with Ontario's SB-10 energy code, meeting all regulatory requirements within the tight two-week timeframe. Energy modeling results showed a 30% improvement in Energy Use Intensity (EUI), a 35% reduction in Greenhouse Gas Intensity (GHGI), and a 44% decrease in peak energy demand.

Adaptis Advantage

Adaptis provided a fast-tracked solution, completing the energy modeling and compliance process in just two weeks. By leveraging advanced modeling tools and AI based technology, Adaptis ensured the project not only met the regulatory requirements but also achieved significant energy and GHG savings, reducing operational costs and supporting the customer's sustainability goals.
